Why focus on Sub-Saharan Africa?
Sub-Saharan Africa is right at the frontline of this crisis. More than 40% of the people living in the region lack access to safe drinking water, and more than two thirds live without adequate sanitation.
In the time it takes to play every World Cup match, 140 African children will lose their lives to preventable diarrhoea caused by dirty water and lack of toilets. Overall health costs and productivity losses caused by dirty water and poor sanitation are estimated to cost Sub-Saharan Africa 5% of GDP or more than $28 billion per year, severely undermining efforts to achieve sustainable human and economic development.
