From campaign to CSO
WASH United is a charitable limited liability company (gGmbH) working on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene issues in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
WASH United started its first campaign around the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Many development initiatives surfed the wave of the 2010 World Cup but faded out soon after. WASH United was only getting started.
Interest in our football-based approach started to spread across Africa, with organisations both within and outside the WASH sector seeking to collaborate with us. In addition, as organisations from South Asia approached us, we realised that our sport- and fun-based approach was not restricted to football; we would be able to use it for cricket, athletics, netball, Bollywood – whatever works best in a country.
Existing funders continued to support us, while new large funders showed strong interest in scaling up our programs in Africa and developing new cricket-based programs for India. WASH United was growing fast. Those new opportunities came with the need for tailor-made structures and processes to support the growth.
In late 2011, WASH United was incorporated as an independent non-profit limited liability company headquartered in Berlin. Also, we are expanding our organizational structure through regional offices in South Asia (in Delhi/India, operational since September 2012) and in Africa (in Nairobi/Kenya, to be established by June 2013).
